Light Metering Exercise

This exercise demonstrated the effect internal DSLR reflective light meters have on differently toned subjects.  As the reflective light meters aim to expose subjects as mid toned we see light objects as being under exposed and dark subjects as being over exposed.

We were given the task of taking pictures of white, average, black and mixed toned subjects with the internal light meter determining the exposure. We were then to take the same image again but adjusting the  shutter speed to give what we considered a correct exposure.

White subject in camera metering.
125 @ f32

White subject adjusted 1 stop over exposed
60sec @ f32

Black subject in camera metering.
125 @ f5.6

Black subject adjusted 1 stop under exposed
250sec @ f5.6

Mixed subject in camera metering.
No exposure compensation required.
125sec @f11

Mid toned subject in camera metering.
Slightly under exposed.
125 sec @ f32
Mid toned subject adjusted 1 stop.
60 sec @ f32

Once this exercise was complete we were given some free time to roam and take photos.

  1. Some nice work Joel. With your headshot of the man above you have found some good quality light...but don't forget once you have this light then think about the composition. There is too much space above his head, and the shine on the metal is distracting. I can see you can compose well when you don't have the pressure of someone in front of you. Howvever, you made a good connection with this man. Belinda
